This year's competition is officially over!
Winners were announced yesterday at the Balcombe Gardeners' Association Autumn Show.
First place set a new competition record for tallest sunflower, with an absolute monster measuring 354cm!
Third place a very respectable 312cm - for those of you who were at the show, this was the sunflower that was on display.
We also gave away a couple of Great Growing! awards for people who really got into the spirit of the competition.
The Richard Garman Cup went to the tallest sunflower grown by a child - an impressive 210cm!
And of course the Nicest Flower award, which also went to a child entry.
Thanks again to everyone who took part, it's only the second year and it's been another great competiton!

Fun in the sun!
Wow! It's been a hot few weeks here at Sunflower Competition HQ.
Our sunflowers are all about to flower - we haven't grown any monsters ourselves, but we've had plenty of great entries!
If you're thinking of entering remember that you have until 1st September to submit your entries, and it doesn't matter if you've used our seeds or your own - everyone's welcome.
If you're worried that you might not have the tallest sunflower there are runners up, and nicest flower awards too so there's there's still everything to play for!

Grow Grow Grow!
It's been a busy few weeks for the Sunflower Competition - we've given away loads of seeds and it's been great meeting so many of you at the plant sale, hope your sunflowers are going strong!
We won't be taking part in the competition ourselves, but we planted a few different varieties this year to see how they compared.
Of course we've planted a few of the competition seeds Helianthus Kong, as well as one of our other favourites Mongolian Giant, and for the first time this year we're trying Titan, and Sunzilla which can grow up to 3 meters tall (10 feet) with a head that's a massive 45cm across (18 inches)!
Our oldest plants are around three weeks old now, so far they've made it through the wind and rain but we've lost a few to slugs!
We've put down plenty of grit and sand to try and keep them at bay - if anyone's having slug problems we posted some of the more popular methods for dealing with those savage beasts here on the blog last year.
If you've got any tips you want to share, drop us an email or comment below!
