What's it all about?

SKY'S THE LIMIT!
Balcombe Sunflower Competition is a fun, friendly challenge that encourages village residents to go head to head in a bid to see who can grow the tallest flower.
Why not get your neighbours involved and encourage some friendly rivalry?

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Open to children and adults, families and individuals, the competition is completely free to enter. If you live in the village we'll even give you some free seeds to get you started (if they don't run out!)
  • Competition runs until 1st September
  • 1st prize will go to the tallest sunflower
  • Runner-up and nicest flower awards also up for grabs

GET INVOLVED
If you're up for the challenge and fancy taking part then let us know - you'll find our contact details on the flyers and posters on display around the village, or you can email us at balcombesunflowercompetition@gmail.com.

Winners will be announced at the Balcombe Gardeners' Association Annual Show on 8th September. We'll be in touch nearer the time to see how everyone's getting on and make arrangements to confirm the tallest entries.

  SEEDS THE DAY!

Balcombe Sunflower Competition 2018

Sunday, 10 September 2017

This year's competition is officially over!

Winners were announced yesterday at the Balcombe Gardners' Association Autumn show.

We had a great afternoon, the show was amazing as usual and thank you to everyone who popped over to our little stand and said hi, was great to meet you all.

We had some very impressive entries;

First Prize went to a family team, who grew a sunflower measuring a staggering 340cm!

In Second, another giant at 294cm.

And Third Prize was won by a very respectable 292cm.

We awarded a 'Nicest Flower' prize, and also gave out a couple of 'Great Growing' Awards, for two entries we thought had done really well this year.

At 284cm, one of those just missed out on the top three, but did win the Gardeners' Association Richard Garman Cup, for the tallest sunflower grown by a child.

Well done everyone, and thanks for taking part!

Hope to see you all again next year.

Now that's allotment of sunflowers!

A couple of weeks back we took a walk to the allotments to see if anyone was growing sunflowers - they didn't disappoint!

The owners of this plot gave us permission to share them here on the blog.

We're sure you'll agree they look amazing - lovely flowers, and check out those nice thick stems!

So Far, So Good!

Our sunflowers are 6 weeks old this weekend!

Currently, our tallest is 142cm (56 inches) tall, but remember we're not entering the competition, so if yours are shorter than that, don't worry.

If yours are taller though, well done!

Feel free to send us a photo and we'll post it here so everyone can see how well you're doing.

You're also welcome to share any handy tips you might have, even if you're not taking part in the competition yourself - if you have some sunflower growing expertise that you want to share, let us know.

And remember, if you're already growing your own sunflowers you're welcome to enter them.

Entry is totally free and you get great prizes, plus bragging rights for an entire year if you win!
